I created a test wiki that I kept private.
On thing I noticed is the similarity in possible uses for a blog and a wiki.
Earlier in this course, I started a blog that talked about setting up a detailed inventory system on a computer. It was similar to a help manual - or even a poor man's 'Dummy' book. Inviting fellow workers to contribute to the blog produced an ongoing story of how to proceed. It is occasionaly necessary to edit a blog post as we learn new details.
A wiki can create similar results (especially if you use pages well). Editing and tracking posts is certainly easier in a wiki.
I haven't used either long or deeply enough to determine which is better suited for the end goal of creating a guide for this complicated task.

Thing 15
Well, wikis are something that have a well established use.
Who hasn't used Wikipedia for basic research (just don't try to cite it to a professor!).
In looking through various wikis for this 'thing', I came across
http://petdiabetes.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
which had very good information and references on diabetes in pets.
It was especially timely because just today I had a patient who is looking for help in understanding her vet's treatment of her cat's diabetes. Pharmacists in Pennsylvania are not trained in veterinary medicine and I couldn't offer a lot of help. The information in this wiki was more than adequate to meet her needs.

Thing 13 and 14
Well technorati is interesting. It does facilitate searches for blogs and posts.
There are 5 times more blogs on Lady Gaga than on Formula 1.
How does anyone have time to spend on these sites?
Does this occur to anyone else?
I've yet to think of a compelling use for these sites.
Maybe a good nights sleep will spark a vision.

Thing 12
I've played with delicious.com.
The first commercial use I see is for a list of bookmarks that would allow one to access the myriad of third party insurance plans that people in the medical field have to deal with. This would not be very 'social' but it would be productive. I set up an account that includes the Official Formula 1 site and Politico.com.

I'm going to give up on lesson #10 with Rollyo.com as it is always down for repair. I did look at one of their other sites, Addictomatic: Inhale the Web , and it makes it very easy to develop a page that consolidates many different sites. You choose your area of interest and are presented with links, all on one page, to many different sites with relevant topics.
While Rollyo.com was down for repair, I decided to work on thing #11 and play with Glogster. The poster I created contains pictures of the Cicada brood that was active in May-June 2004. While the photos are interesting, the sound of being there was amazing. It was more than a din, it was a pulsating dynamic roar that lasted for weeks. Unfortunately, I don't have an audio track to link. I'll never forget the atmosphere and look forward to 2021 when I can hear it again!

Well I've now gone through all the tutorials etc on RSS and it seems like it might have some merit. I've set up 11 feeds BUT . . . . Bloglines will not send an email for me to confirm so that the account becomes active. I've switched the email address to one I commonly use and still no email from Bloglines. I'll try in an hour or 2. This is supposed to work.

The small pleaures of a blizzard
This photo was taken through the snow blasted side glass of our front door.

The view of the twinkle lights under the fresh snow against the twilight snow pack created this surrealistic image.
Extreme weather can produce some of the most amazing sights.
